3 Things You Can Count on in My Photo Edits

When you're shopping around for a senior portrait photographer, one of the most important observations you can make is their editing style.  Check out their Instagram and Facebook feed to make sure their editing style is consistent.  You may want to ask yourself these questions:

  • How is the lighting in the images?  Are there unflattering shadows on the subject's face or is the lighting evenly spread?
  • How much skin smoothing editing techniques are done on the subjects?  Do the subjects look natural, or do they look plastic?
  • Is there a consistent color tone to the images, or do they vary from image to image?

Here are the 3 things that you can always count on in my images

I LOVE to bring out the sparkle in my client's eyes!  To me, nothing brings an image more to life than seeing the sparkle in eyes.  The image becomes more inviting when you can see the joy radiating from the subject, rather than a dull, dark eye.  I photograph my clients with the intention of bringing out the sparkle, whether it's with natural lighting, with a reflector, or with off camera flash.  To me, it doesn't matter how I get it, I just get it!  I love the image above of this gorgeous senior, but it wouldn't look nearly as beautiful or joyful without her sparkle!

The second editing technique that you can always count is consistent color tones.  If you scroll my Instagram or Facebook feed, you'll see that all my images have the same tonality, and that the main ingredient in all my images (besides my beautiful clients) is light.  Shadows are an important part of light, and all images should have shadows, but not under the eyes or across their entire face.  My editing style is to create beautifully lit images with rich colors.  I want my images to look "real", not over photoshopped with filters and techniques that look odd.  But you're looking for light and airy, or dark and moody?  No problem, if the image calls for those type of tones, you've got it!  However, I'll draw the line at another trendy look; I will not make your skin orange and grass gray.  Yuck!   I don't want my clients to look like oopa loompas!

And lastly, the third thing that you can always count on with my edits is clean skin editing.  We all have smile lines and indentations under our eyes, because we're human.  All my clients are already beautiful.  If you have a beauty mark, it stays.  If you have a blemish or two (and who doesn't?), it goes.  My job is not to make all skin pores disappear, or make the hollows under eyes filled in, or skin so smooth that it looks like plastic.   My job is to take an already beautiful person, and allow that beauty to shine through the image, naturally.

If you're looking for a senior portrait photographer, I invite you to look at my Facebook and Instagram feed to see if my style is your style.  If it is, contact me.  Let's get started planning your senior's session!
